La Lanterna - City Centre

 

Today I visited La Lanterna in Glasgow’s city centre for lunch and all I can say is – wow. It is absolutely no surprise this restaurant has won numerous notable awards!

Situated right next to Glasgow Central Station in Hope Street, La Lanterna has been operating in Glasgow since 1970 and is Glasgow’s oldest family run Italian restaurant. When you are in the restaurant, it is so easy to forget that you’re actually in Glasgow with the distinctive Italian décor. 

You can feel the elegance of the restaurant from the minute you walk through the door. The restaurant was in pristine condition, and the service was incredible. 

The menu included an appetising list of Pastas, Pesce (Fish) & Carne (Meat), with an even better wine selection. Unfortunately, I was the designated driver and wasn’t able to enjoy it – but will definitely be returning when someone else is driving. 

We took advantage of the lunchtime menu which was two courses for £14.95 (very reasonable for such good quality food!). For starters I ordered the Crostino Funghi Fonduta Taleggio and it went beyond my expectations. You could really appreciate how much effort was put into the creation of the dish with the incredible flavours and the presentation. 

For my main course I opted for a classic - Vegetable Lasagne Bolognese and it was indescribable. The bolognese sauce was cooked to perfection and was a very decent portion size. The dish was incredibly filling. My only disappointment was that I had no room for desert! 

Overall, everything was perfect. Throughout the meal, the waiters checked in to ensure that we had enough drinks, and the food was to our expectations whilst giving us enough privacy to enjoy our meal. They were very friendly, extremely knowledgeable, and were actually Italian! La Lanterna also has another location on Great Western Road in the West End which is definitely worth visiting too.
